Scam Warning for student Visa Holders in Australia by DIAC

Releasing the media statement on 1 February 2013, Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) warned international students to be aware of individuals impersonating departmental officers seeking payment for alleged breaches of their visa conditions.

The DIAC statement says that the scammers are targeting overseas students in Australia who have limited working rights as part of their visa conditions. It has been informed that some students have received ‘fine notices’ demanding payments of thousands of dollars for unlawfully working above 40 hours a fortnight.

DIAC has advised that any students contacted by people seeking such payments should refuse to pay, and should report the incident to the police and to the Immigration Dob-ln Line on 1800 009 623.
